Transportation for America is seeking a qualified illustrator, designer or artist to produce a series of illustrations to communicate the need for changes to the transportation system in line with our principles.  The contract will run from August 16 through December 31, 2021.

Transportation for America is a national nonprofit that is made up of local, regional and state leaders who envision a transportation system that safely, affordably and conveniently connects people of all means and ability to jobs, services, and opportunity through multiple modes of travel. We do our work through direct technical assistance, analysis of the existing transportation system’s performance, and policy development and advocacy.

Scope of work

Much of our work requires communication of technical, complicated, often confusing issues to explain why a particular change or reform is needed. Producing good illustrations requires significant time explaining and discussing these ideas to land on the best way to explain them visually. See the cards illustrating our principles and our more formal platform, our Driving Down Emissions report (see especially pages 12, 15) and Congestion Con report for examples.

For this project, we intend to collaboratively develop cartoons, illustrations, and gifs that will help build our advocacy base, sway public opinion, and explain wonky policies in a manner that can be understood by a wide range of people inside and outside the transportation policy world. We’re especially interested in receiving qualifications from those who have worked on public policy campaigns, those with a basic understanding of the transportation policy landscape, those that have produced work that explains issues related to equity, and those that can illustrate our issues with a little humor. We have significant hours and budget committed to the scope of this project; we will work with the selected applicant to determine the budget and specifics of the scope, depending on the skillset of the selected applicant.

Additional aspirational qualifications

In addition to the cartoons and/or illustrations, we have other desired projects that an artist may be able to contribute to an as-needed basis, such as:

  • Powerpoint templates for T4America staff to use that sync with the illustrations
  • Animation or motion graphics
  • Video

Desired qualifications

  • A proven ability to communicate complex policies into simple, understandable visuals accessible to a wide range of audiences.
  • Basic understanding of transportation policies and issues, a readiness to listen and learn more.
  • Quality portfolio of illustrations, cartoons, and/or other artwork designed to educate, call people to action, and/or sway public opinion.
  • Experience creating art that communicates complex concepts related to equity, and that accurately depicts a range of demographics including people of color.
  • Understanding of the Transportation for America voice (look at our Twitter feed or our director’s for examples).

Process

T4America intends to interview several respondents, with the goal selecting the person with the best fit of qualifications and relevant experience. We will then work with the selected applicant to develop a scope of work and a contract with an anticipated start date of August 16th. The contract will run through December 31, 2021.
