What is BRT and Why Do Cities Need It?

From Boston to Mexico City to Jakarta, bus rapid transit (BRT) systems have transformed how people move and experience their cities worldwide. Since BRT’s initial conception in the 1970s in Brazil, this form of cost-effective and efficient rapid transit has grown to thousands of kilometers across nearly 200 cities today, with multiple systems being planned.

Over the past few decades, ITDP has been committed to promoting quality BRT systems and plans worldwide. Notably, the organization launched the BRT Standard in 2012 as a framework for understanding BRT and an evaluation tool for corridors based on international best practices. The latest 2024 Edition of the Standard was the product of feedback from BRT practitioners, partners, and experts to provide updated guidance and resources to stakeholders seeking to harness the climate, economic, and social benefits of robust BRT networks.
