Each year, the Sustainable Transport Award (STA) honors cities that are redefining their streets and mobility systems to prioritize sustainability, inclusivity, and equity. Since 2005, ITDP and the STA Committee have recognized small and large cities around the world for implementing ambitious transport strategies that reduce transport emissions, expand access, and promote more resilient and prosperous communities. Beyond celebrating select achievements in policy and infrastructure, the STA continues to serve as a vital platform for knowledge exchange, peer-to-peer learning, and inspiration for scalable best practices. From a pool of nearly two dozen applicants, the top five 2026 STA finalists represent cities across South Asia, South America, and the Middle East that are tackling pressing mobility challenges in today’s world. By implementing innovative policies and transport projects to improve public transport integration, reduce traffic congestion, increase accessibility, and adapt to climate change, these cities are demonstrating the transformative power of sustainable mobility. Their efforts reaffirm a shared principle: sustainable mobility is integral to advancing both economic, environmental, and social objectives. As we look ahead to the winner’s announcement in January 2026, let us review the projects launched over the past year that have set these finalists apart.
