This is poised to be a world-changing year. For countries across the globe, 2024 will be a turning point in terms of politics, with people from at least 64 countries voting in major national elections. It is estimated that more voters than ever in history will head to the polls, making nearly half of the world’s population. On the urgent issue of climate change, these elections – and the decision-makers that will assume power — will have a resounding impact on policy and practice for years to come. As we all know, rising temperatures and emissions continue to exacerbate natural disasters and weather events around the world. The actions that governments and policymakers take over the next few years will be consequential on the ways their nations address and prepare for these growing threats.
